ノルウェーの写真家、カロリーヌ・ヨルトと、フィンランドのアーティストであるリタ・イコネンによる作品集『Eyes as Big as Plates』。
2011年にノルウェーのアーティスト・レジデンスに滞在したリタが、コラボレーションをする相手を探し、ノルウェーの写真家を検索することでカロリーヌを発見して出会ったというデュオ。
本書は、そのコラボをまとめた作品集で、草木などの植物からできたウェアラブルな彫刻を身に着けた人々が自然の中に佇むポートレート作品で構成されています。
作品の発端は、北欧の民間伝承に登場するキャラクターに扮することから始まったようですが、回を重ねるごとに人間と自然の関係を探求する試みへと変わっていったようです。
ノルウェーやフィンランドだけでなくヨーロッパやアメリカ、日本、韓国など10カ国で撮影を実施しており、被写体となった人々はいずれも高齢者で、50名以上が参加。
自然に同化するように佇む人々の姿は幻想的で、民俗学的な世界観と現代アートの世界観が融合しています。
